# CMA CGM demurrage and detention in the US: tariff, free time and last free day calculator

CMA CGM publishes its US demurrage and detention tariff as a PDF on its e-business tariff page, with general terms that define how the time is measured. Free days and rates are not copied here; the calculator applies the published tariff to your dates.

## Where the tariff is

CMA CGM lists its demurrage and detention tariffs by country on its [e-business tariff page](https://www.cma-cgm.com/ebusiness/tariffs/demurrage-detention); the United States entry is a [PDF effective 2026-08-06](https://www.cma-cgm.com/assets/public/documents/DD_Tariffs_US_06-AUG-2026%20v3.pdf), with one page per port or port group. The [general terms](https://www.cma-cgm.com/ebusiness/tariffs/demurrage-detention/general-terms) define the terms the tariff uses.

## How CMA CGM counts free time

- The US tariff says: "FREE DAYS ARE IN WORKING DAYS. AFTER EXPIRATION OF FREE DAYS, TARIFF IS BILLABLE IN CALENDAR DAYS".
- **Demurrage** on imports runs "as from container discharge from the vessel till gate-out of the full container" (general terms).
- **Detention** on imports runs "as from gate-out of the full container till gate-in of the empty container", and "the first chargeable day is the first day following the last day of free time" (general terms).
- The California page adds that no demurrage is assessed on days a terminal is closed, including weekends and holidays.
- Neither document says whether the discharge or gate-out day itself is the first free day, and we do not guess it. CMA CGM's own last free day lookup is at [cma-cgm.com/ebusiness/demdet](https://www.cma-cgm.com/ebusiness/demdet) (needs a My CMA CGM login).

## How to pay

CMA CGM's [US import information guide](https://www.cma-cgm.com/local/united-states/import-information-guide) points to ePayment through the [Invoice Dashboard](https://www.cma-cgm.com/ebusiness/invoice), with ACH and credit card options; it needs a My CMA CGM login.

## Before you pay

Compare the invoice with the tariff and with the contract. If the free time or the daily rate does not match, or the invoice leaves out what the FMC requires, see [what a US invoice must show and how to dispute it](../dispute/), and draft your reply with the [dispute letter tool](../../letter/). Other tools: [last free day, any carrier](../../last-free-day/).
