Where the tariff is
Evergreen Line’s US agency, Evergreen Shipping Agency (America) Corp., lists its demurrage and detention editions on its Demurrage/Detention Tariff and Policy page . The import rule in force when we read it is Tariff #601, Rule 036-I01 , effective 2026-10-10. It sets free time and daily charges port by port for demurrage, and one table for detention at all US ports.
How Evergreen counts free time
- Demurrage runs while the container stays undelivered at the carrier’s port terminal after free time. The tariff says Saturdays, Sundays and holidays are excluded “unless commonly worked by the respective port”, and it prints when free time starts port by port (for some ports just after discharge of the container, for others at a set hour or after the vessel finishes discharge). Some ports’ free time is printed in calendar days and others in working days.
- Detention (per diem) is counted from pick-up: in the tariff’s words, free time “commences on the day the Equipment is picked up, includes the day of return, and is calculated on a working-day basis”.
- A “working day” in the tariff is a day on which the return location “is open and operating with gate activity”. So a Saturday on which the gate is open can count. Our calculator counts working days as Monday to Friday, so where a gate opens on a weekend Evergreen’s last free day can come earlier than ours.
We do not hold Evergreen’s New York demurrage: the tariff prints separate tables for Maher Terminals and for the other New York terminals, and we have no way to tell them apart from a port code.
Evergreen publishes its own US demurrage and detention tariff and its dispute and payment instructions on its site: https://www.evergreen-line.com/. We link to it and do not copy it.
How to pay
Evergreen’s eService site ShipmentLink offers e-Payment and i-Invoice ; both need a ShipmentLink account. Check the invoice before you pay (next section).
Before you pay
Compare the invoice with the tariff and with the contract. If the free time or the daily rate does not match, or the invoice leaves out what the FMC requires, see what a US invoice must show and how to dispute it , and draft your reply with the dispute letter tool . Other tools: last free day, any carrier .
