# Last free day for a container at a US port: calculator

The last free day is the last day before demurrage or detention starts. It depends on the carrier's tariff, the port, the container, whether days are calendar or working days, and the day the count starts. A contract with the carrier may give more.

## How the answer is built

The calculator reads the free days and the way days are counted from the carrier's published US tariff in our data, then counts from the date you enter. It tells you when it cannot: if the tariff does not say when counting starts, or we do not hold the tariff, the answer is "not calculated" with the reason, and never a guess.

- **Calendar days** count every day. **Working days** skip days the tariff excludes. We count working days the way each tariff defines them: Monday to Friday unless the tariff says otherwise (the Maersk US tariff counts a working day as a day the gate is open Monday to Saturday), and never US federal holidays (list below). A terminal can close on other days too, so treat the result as a check and confirm the date with the carrier.
- **The count start** differs by tariff: discharge day, the day after discharge, the availability date, gate-out. The result names the one used.
- **A contract with the carrier may give more** free time than the published tariff. The calculator knows only the published tariff.
- **Port rows win over all-port rows** when a tariff has both.
