# New York and New Jersey demurrage: terminals and last free day

At New York and New Jersey the Port Authority publishes one tariff for its public berths, Maher Terminals publishes its own, and the other private terminals use a common tariff. Check availability on your terminal's own site, then use the last free day calculator with port code USNYC. We do not copy port or terminal tariffs.

## One port, three sets of tariffs

The Port Authority of New York and New Jersey runs the port and publishes, on its [marine terminal tariffs page](https://www.panynj.gov/port/en/doing-business/tariffs.html), the documents that describe fees and charges for dockage, wharfage, demurrage and related services. As of 2026-10-21 the page lists three groups:

- **Port Authority public berths:** the Port Authority Marine Terminal Tariff, FMC Schedule No. PA 10, with an edition effective September 1, 2026 as the latest listed.
- **Maher Terminals:** its own tariff, linked from the same page.
- **All other private terminal operators:** a common tariff for the terminals the page names as APM, GCT Bayonne LP, GCT New York LP, Port Newark Container Terminal and Red Hook Container Terminal, with an edition effective October 1, 2025.

We do not reproduce free time or rates from any of them: open the one that matches your terminal. A charge from the terminal is a terminal schedule charge (see [demurrage vs detention](/en/demurrage/vs/)); a charge from the carrier is under the carrier's own tariff.

## The container terminals

| Terminal | Where | Official site and what it offers |
|---|---|---|
| Port Newark Container Terminal (PNCT) | Port Newark, NJ | [pnct.net](https://www.pnct.net): container availability by container and by bill of lading, demurrage and fee information, the common tariff |
| Maher Terminals | Elizabeth, NJ | [maherterminals.com](https://www.maherterminals.com): tariff, schedule of charges, demurrage inquiry |
| APM Terminals | Elizabeth, NJ | [apmterminals.com/elizabeth](https://www.apmterminals.com/en/elizabeth): track and trace, import availability |
| Port Liberty New York | Staten Island, NY | Listed on the [port's terminal page](https://www.panynj.gov/port/en/our-port/container-terminals.html) with its site |
| Port Liberty Bayonne | Bayonne, NJ | Same page |

The port's terminal page names the last two Port Liberty terminals; its tariffs page uses the names GCT Bayonne LP and GCT New York LP. If a terminal's name differs between your invoice and these pages, ask the issuer which tariff applies.

## How the calculator handles New York and New Jersey

Use port code **USNYC** in the calculator. It counts from the date you enter using the carrier's published US tariff.

Points specific to this port:

- Our Maersk rows for the New York and New Jersey terminals are separate from its all-ports rows, and the calculator prefers the port row.
- ZIM prices APM Terminals New York separately; our ZIM table covers the other terminals under USNYC, not APM's table.
- MSC's published sheet prices demurrage only at Port Everglades, so there are no MSC demurrage rows here. ONE's free days by port are not in a published sheet, so there is no ONE file. Each carrier page says what we hold.
- For working-day tariffs it skips Sundays and the US federal holidays below. It does not know a terminal's own closures, so confirm the date with the carrier or terminal.

## FAQ

**Which tariff applies to my container at Port Newark or Elizabeth?**

It depends on the terminal. The Port Authority's tariffs page lists a Port Authority Marine Terminal Tariff for its public berths, a separate Maher Terminal tariff, and a common tariff for APM, Port Newark Container Terminal and the other private operators. Your invoice must name the rule behind the rate.

**Where do I check whether my container is available at Newark or Elizabeth?**

On the terminal's site: PNCT has container availability lookups by container and by bill of lading, APM Terminals Elizabeth has an import availability page, and Maher Terminals has a demurrage inquiry.

**Which port code do I enter?**

USNYC. Our carrier tables for the New York and New Jersey terminals use that one code.
