# Union Pacific intermodal storage: where the policy is and how it works

Union Pacific publishes an Intermodal Storage Policy page with domestic and international free time and a day-by-day charge table. Free time starts after the unit is notified, and a day the terminal is closed all day is not counted. Its official tariffs and circulars supersede the page.

## What UP publishes

The [Intermodal Storage Policy](https://www.up.com/shipping/intermodal/resource-center/storage-charts) page, under the [Intermodal Resource Center](https://www.up.com/shipping/intermodal/resource-center), gives separate free time for domestic and international units and charge tables by day. We do not copy them. What it says in words:

- Free time starts at 0001 after the day the unit is notified.
- If an intermodal terminal is closed for an entire calendar day for any reason, that day is not included in free time or storage charge calculation.
- Rates are subject to change with 30-day notice.
- Information in UP's official documents (tariffs, circulars, contracts, quotes) supersedes the page.

The resource center also lists Intermodal Terms & Conditions and an intermodal holiday schedule.

## Using it

Ask for the notification date and compare with the invoice. This clock starts at notification, not ocean discharge, so it is not the [ocean last free day](/en/demurrage/last-free-day/). Rail is not in our calculator yet; see [rail storage vs ocean demurrage](/en/demurrage/rail/).
