## How Yang Ming counts free time

Yang Ming publishes its basic US tariff in a search on its [Demurrage & Detention page](https://www.yangming.com/en/esolution/price_and_tariff/demurrage_and_detention), by bound, container type and area. Each row shows the port, the container and cargo type, the free time, the day type and its own effective date. What the page says about counting:

- The day type shows whether free time is counted in working days or calendar days. It varies by port.
- For US import demurrage, a working day is a day the terminal or facility is open for import cargo pick-up. In Oakland, Long Beach and Los Angeles it is a day the terminal is open for full container pick-up, excluding holidays. Truckers must follow the terminals' gate schedules.
- Detention free time starts from the day of interchange. Since June 11, 2023, import detention after free time accumulates on working days, which leave out Saturdays, Sundays, legal holidays and days the marine terminal gate is closed. Yang Ming's [detention FAQ](https://www.yangming.com/content/CMS/UTwfDPgkfmWD4krT_FAQ%20on%20Detention%20(%20Effective%20on%201%20January,%202026%20).pdf) adds that detention is only charged for days the depot, ramp or terminal gate is open.
- In New York, New Jersey, Mobile (APM terminal), Miami, Seattle (SSA terminals), Oakland and Long Beach (PCT), line demurrage and terminal storage are charged separately. The terminal assesses its storage on its own account.

The page states that actual free time depends on your service contract with Yang Ming.

## Before you pay

Compare the invoice with the tariff and with the contract. If the free time or the daily rate does not match, or the invoice leaves out what the FMC requires, see [what a US invoice must show and how to dispute it](../dispute/). Other tools: [last free day, any carrier](../../last-free-day/).
